North Korea Crosses Trump’s Red Line. What now?

On Wednesday North Korea test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of delivering a warhead “Anywhere in the world”, in the words of US Defense Secretary James Mattis.

The ICBM, which was launched from a mobile missile launcher near the West Coast of North Korea, in the South Pyongan Province flew eastward, ultimate landing about 600 miles off the coast of Japan. With the missile’s trajectory, which launched it more than 10 times as high as the orbiting altitude of the international space station (which normally orbits 225 miles in the air), the missile only traveled about 1,000 land-miles. If the trajectory was zeroed-in for maximum distance, the missile could travel about 13,000km or 8,000 miles. This means that it could travel to any city in the United States in less than 30 minutes.

The missile landed in a section of water known as the Japanese Economic Exclusion Zone. Under the international law, North Korea did indeed fire the missile into Japan. Japan, along with the United States and South Korea called for a special meeting of the UN Security Council, as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that diplomatic options remain “viable and open”.

Former US Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolten struck a much different tune in the wake of North Korea’s latest missile test, saying that America and North Korea are “past the point of diplomacy”.

President Trump said that the North Korea problem will be taken care of, when asked by the press during a gaggle which was supposed to be focused on tax reform. President Trump previously vowed that North Korea will not be allowed to achieve the capability of hitting the US Mainland. That message has been echoed by senior Pentagon officials over the past several months.

The critical questions now come down to what the US’ response will be. With the majority of diplomatic options having already been exhausted and met with fresh vows from North Korea to never surrender their nuclear program, it appears that what is left is a North Korea that is a nuclear power or the start of serious military action to stop them.

Mid-level Pentagon officials told Offended America that the President has been briefed on seven separate military options. The officials declined to disclose any further details.
