North Korea Doubles Down on Threats, as Russia Provides Aid

After the United Nations unanimously passed new sanctions against North Korea, the Kim regime doubled down on threats as new reports come out that Russia is propping up the rogue regime.

After the latest sanctions, North Korea released a statement.

“The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is “ready to use a form of ultimate means,” Han said without elaborating. The forthcoming measures by DPRK will make the U.S. “suffer the greatest pain it ever experienced in its history,” he said.

According to senior US Officials, Russian smugglers have been scurrying shipments of crude oil and other vital supplies into North Korea. These new assessments raise serious doubts about whether financial sanctions can be effective against the rogue regime.

Official documents provided to the Washington Post, show a major increase in trade between North Korea and Vladivostok. Among the most common shipments are arriving in North Korea are tankers filled with Petroleum.

If one thing is known about Russian business, it’s that very little happens without the approval and aid of the Kremlin.

At this point, it seems that enforcement of sanctions is the critical step. While tougher and tougher sanctions get passes, very few of them go without being usurped by profiteers in Russia and China. Without a blockade that is enforced with military assets, it’s unlikely that this will change any time soon.

The US Treasury has begun to take steps against specific Russian individuals that are believed to be involved in smuggling supplies to North Korea, including freezing and seizing assets and businesses.

According the the Washington Post:

“Traffic between Vladivostok and the port of Rajin in North Korea has become so heavy that local officials this year launched a dedicated ferry line between the two cities. The service was temporarily suspended last week because of a financial dispute.”

While financial measures can slow down and discourage trade between Russia and North Korea, anything short of a militarily enforced blockade will actually stop the supplies from arriving in North Korea, and proving material aid to the regime.
